I can’t believe we are into another year already, can you?! I’m kicking off this year by chatting about all things blogging and social media course! Because let’s face it as online entrepreneurs both blogging and social media are super important to the success of our businesses! No matter what industry you’re in, if you ain’t on social media you’re doing yourself and your business a huge disservice! In this post I want to help you decide whether you should be paying out the big bucks for that blogging and social media course!
Please note this post may contain affiliate links, where if you decide to purchase anything from the links I provide, I will receive a small commission at no extra cost to you! So here’s sending you a big thank you hug in advance!
So over the last few weeks in December I’ve been taking it right back to the start when it comes to getting my blog seen by other people, in more technical terms getting more traffic.
Sorry to put it bluntly but that’s just how it is! So I figured to really throw myself into my online journey this year, I need to learn a little more about social media, blogging and by the way how do you master SEO?! If you’re a new blogger in town as well then you may even be wondering what SEO even is – some days it still gets me all in a twist!
So as many of us have already done and so many of us will continue to do, I decided I needed a teacher to teach me the ropes! Obviously there are hundreds and thousands of resources out out there. I figured the best way to go is to find a blogging and social media course. But of course when I typed into uncle google ‘blogging and social media course’ I was hit with mega overwhelm! The kind of overwhelm that makes you want to slam your laptop shut and go hit the mall instead!
But I knew I had to ignore the overwhelm and just get stuck in. Because if I want this to be a success I have to learn the ropes! So many people start blogging and just think you can write a few posts and the traffic will come running – not going to happen my friend!
Like with anything you need to learn the basics. For example you wouldn’t decide to cook up a creme brule for pudding one day without looking at a recipe? & if you would, maybe you and I just ain’t ideal suiters! So I’m going to share with you the few things I’ve learnt about blog and social media courses, the free and the paid & how to beat the massive OVERWHELM!
Should We be Paying for a Blogging and Social Media Course?
When I first started blogging in June 2018 I was so naive to the online world. I was one of those people who thought I didn’t need to learn anything and what I needed to learn, I could get for free! (Laugh at point at my stupidity!) One thing I’ve realised in life and this doesn’t matter if it’s in business or not, you get what you pay for.
When you pay for a week long yoga retreat in the Bali hills and pay $1000 for it you’d expect to get different classes each day, gorgeous food, quality teachers, be surrounded by people who are taking it seriously. Whereas if you pay $50 for an afternoon of yoga you wouldn’t expect as much! You pay $500 for a meal, hell it better come served on gold plated crockery! But if you pay $12 you wouldn’t bat an eyelid if it comes out on a paper plate.
Well the same thing goes for any blogging and social media course. Now I’m telling you, I’ve taken I think close to 80 or 90 free blog and social media classes. In ALL forms, webinars, posts, courses you name it I’ve seen it! & Some of them have been amazing! One that I’m getting stuck into now is The Free Blog Traffic Challenge by Ellduclos – you can check her website here! This course already screams value and I’ve only just started! Another one of my favourite Business Teachers is Melssya Griffin who is always giving away free valuable courses – Check her out here! I absolutely love it when you get amazing value for free!
But that isn’t always the case! & I’ve come to realise that though you get some great information, tips and tricks when it comes to online social media and blog courses, people will never give away the BIG STUFF for free.
I often get to the end of a free workshop and think okay great you’ve told me I need to get traffic, to gain trust and build myself an audience. You tell me that my email list is the most precious thing for my biz. But I’m often sat there like, okay great but HOW DO I GET THE TRAFFIC & MY EMAIL LIST ONLY HAS MY MUM, BROTHER AND COUSIN ON IT! HOW DO I GROW IT? I’m sure you’ve been here before too!
That’s the bit that’s often missing with a free social media and blogging course. THE HOW.
So as I continue to make my way through the free content I find myself constantly being asked to upgrade to better offers. Which obviously cost money – these people are running businesses! Just like you and I are trying to do here! So I decided it was time to bite the bullet and pay for a social media and blogging course!
& let me tell you it’s been the best thing I’ve done for my blog and self.
Now people will disagree with me I know, but hey that’s life! But since paying for a course I have learnt so many basics that I was missing out on before! No wonder my blog hasn’t gone viral. YET.
Now I know what you’re thinking, okay Alicia that’s great but how did you decide which course to take? Which one did you take? Why did you take it? and most importantly how much did it cost?!
Well let me tell you a story of how I bought a course from a company who only set up in 2018.
As I’m aimlessly scrolling through Instagram, procrastinating no doubt, I came across a profile called Seek Traveller & it caught my eye instantly. Probably because the lovely lady who runs it has managed to create a business for herself from scratch! I found myself signing straight up for her mailing list and as the emails started coming in, I started resonating with her so much! A previous English Teacher in Italy she was burnt to the ground and needed to change her life before she broke down, even more than she already had.
As I’m reading I’m replying to her in my head ‘I got you girl, I feel what you feel’
It was at that moment that I realised I could and had connected with her through her emails. So I did as she asked and hit add on Facebook and got chatting with her. Low and be hold she was part of a community called Summit Affiliate. An educational platform for everything to do with pursuing a career online. As she tells me of her journey and how she’s been able to create a life she loves everyday, it’s safe to say I was hooked!
But I’m not that stupid! Selling your story is one of the key sales tactics right? I was waiting for that agonising price that came with her offer to get inside this community. When it came, it came with a hefty price tag of $7! Just 7 dollars! I was almost jumping for joy! For some reason I just knew I had to take this offer! So I followed my heart and jumped on board.
So was it worth it?
For just $7 I was enrolled in a Summit Boot Camp & Social Media Blueprint course! With over 10 videos of training all lasing from 5-40 minutes long I got so excited! In these videos I learnt the basics from what traffic is, to leads, sales, setting goals and so much more! The course is one part of it but when you enroll you get automatically accepted into the Summit Insiders Community Facebook group full of hundreds of people, just like you and me, trying to make it happen online, which has been the most valuable of all.
Since then I’ve upgraded and upgraded to the other courses Summit Affiliate have to offer! I’m not going to go on and on about why you should think about grabbing some of their products because this ain’t a sales page.
What I am saying is that when it comes to giving someone your hard earned cash for blogging and social media courses, I think you have to resonate with them. I could relate to what Kelsey was telling me from the get go and I trusted her almost instantly! I now call her a friend, which is totally awesome! So when your taking these courses even it’s from big time bloggers like Nomadic Matt, do your research and think, am I similar to this person? Does their story relate to mine? If I implement their strategies am I going to be staying on brand and staying true to myself?
There are so many courses out there it can be hard to beat the overwhelm! But so far I’ve only needed to pay for courses within Summit Affiliate because the teaching is breathtaking!
I want your take away from this post to be,
Think about you and your knowledge, do I need to learn more about the online world before I nose dive into the ocean and find myself struggling to reach the surface? The answer is probably YES.
When you start a free blogging and social media course, really listen to what they are telling you, is it valuable or is it just a sales pitch for the product at the end? We haven’t got time in our schedules to be listening to webinars that are an hour long to learn nothing new in the end. Hell you could’ve written a viral blog post in that time!
Do your research and be careful! Many a free blogging and social media course I’ve taken told me to pin on Pinterest only five times a day which is rubbish! Since taking on Pinterest training in Summit Affiliate my Pinterest account has grown to over 28K (and rising quickly) monthly views and I’m pinning up to 50 times A DAY! – If something isn’t working for you then scrap it no matter where it’s come from.
& that’s a wrap! I hope you enjoyed this post about beating the blog course overwhelm! If you can find someone you trust and can resonate with, you can guarantee what their offering you will be worth your while! Make sure you sign up mail lists and do the research first, don’t just jump on board because it sounds and looks like a great offer.
So what do you think? I would love to carry on this conversation in the comments! Do you use free or paid social media and blog courses? Or are you one of the wonders of the world who figured it all out on your own?! I would love to hear from you!
Love Alicia x

When I started my travel blog in 2018 I had so many questions about how to do things in the blogging world! I found myself lusting over blogs and the people behind them thinking, ‘I’ll never be as good as them’ & ‘how did they make it’.
What stuck out for me is the fact that there’s a lack of people on the road to success and sharing it! Which is where I come in! I want to share all my ups and downs on my journey from blog to business so that’s why I’m sharing some blogging tips as well as my travel tips!
